Canned Organic Heirloom Garden Seeds |
|
There is no better way to ensure self sufficiency than home gardening. It's taken us a long time to find just the right seeds, but we've found the best heirloom canned organic garden seeds available for your long term seed storage. Heirloom, non-gmo, open pollinated organic seeds that can be grown and harvested from your garden year after year. These seed collections were meticulously picked for their quality, viability and variety. Being gardeners ourselves, we've been concerned by the growing use of Non-Hybrid and Genetically Modified Seeds and their impact on both our personal health as well as our rights to self-sustaining gardening and agriculture. Now, more than ever, it may be important for each of us to have the opportunity and ability to return to a more self-sustaining lifestyle and the independent ability to produce our own clean food. Having access to reliable sources for Non- Hybrid Seeds will allow us to harvest, replant, and replenish our own gardens, which is essential for self reliance. Stored responsibly, these seeds should last upwards of 10-15 years. These seeds are not vacuum packed or nitrogen sealed like many other seed vendors offer. They are hermetically sealed and gently dried with desiccant.

Seed Ethics
We've researched many seed companies for a long time to try and find true, authentic non-hybridized, heirloom seeds that we could sell to our customers for their emergency preparedness storage . It became more of an ethical issue than just selling a can of seeds. There are many companies currently selling seeds claiming to be organic, heirloom, non-gmo, non-hybridized seeds, but what we have found out is that many of these seeds may be questionable. There are just a few seed wholesalers in the US that supply most retail stores with seeds. The bigger question is, where do they get their seeds, are they authenticated or tested, and how old are they? People may want to become more educated when making these choices, especially when their livelyhood may depend on it.
Know Your Seeds
The seed industry has many nuances that should be considered. The only way to be assured that your seeds are truly top quality is to make sure you know where your seed comes from, and if your seed company tests and does trials on their seeds. Ask them what their testing standards and procedures are, and if they grow and harvest their own seed. Only a small percentage of advertised seeds are truly heirloom strains. Large corporate seed giants are having their way with smaller independent seed companies threatening small businesses and causing financial hardship. They are also cross contaminating open pollinated heirloom strains with genetically engineered organisms. Our pure seed strains are under attack and becoming rare and extinct.
Responsible Seed Stewardship
Many stores sell canned seeds or long term seed storage packages. Be especially cautious about buying canned seeds elsewhere that are sealed in nitrogen packed or vacuum sealed cans. (Ours are hermetically sealed with dessicant only) Seeds are living viable organisms that need a certain amount of air to survive. They need to be kept in a low air, not airless environment. Many people think that they can just buy a can of seeds, put it on their shelf, let it sit for years and expect them to viable when opened years later. Educating people on good seed stewardship is not only responsible, but necessary, to protect our precious dwindling seed strains. Frequent seed rotation should be implemented with seeds of shorter life spans. Gently drying your seeds down with dessicant and storing seeds in a cool temperature will insure a longer seed life. Do not freeze your seeds! Freezing your seeds will cause the moisture in the seed cell to expand and harm the nucleus of your seed.
Storing Your Own Seed
Once you've decided on your climate zone, storing your seeds properly will insure the longest life possible. The three most important factors for storing seeds is constant temperature, low humidity and a dark space. A temperature of 50 degrees Fahrenheit or less and 50 percent humidity or lower is ideal. We recommend gently drying your seeds down with a natural clay desiccant for a few days before storing. Seeds can be stored in canning jars, painter type cans, or other air tight containers. Do not use oxygen absorbers, nitrogen packaging or vacuum sealing to store your seeds. Store seeds in a refrigerator or cool dry dark place. Below are some basic examples of seed life expectancy in normal storage conditions:
1 year - Sweet corn, onion, parsnip, okra, parsley
2 years - Beet, pepper, leek
3 years - Asparagus, bean, carrot, celery, lettuce, pea, spinach, tomato
4 years - Cabbage, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, Swiss chard, kale, squash, pumpkin, radish, turnip, rutabaga
5 years - Cucumber, endive, muskmelon, watermelon
Below is a resource list of seed companies that we recommend. Some seeds may be better suited to certain climates than others depending on your climate zone.
Territorial Seed Company - Territorial Seed Company is a privately held company, owned and operated by Tom and Julie Johns. Purchased 23 years ago from master gardener Steve Soloman, they have kept and nurtured Steve’s original ideals. Each year Territorial’s research garden staff grows and evaluates thousands of varieties for best taste, Northwest hardiness, and good germination at their 44 acre London Springs trial grounds in Cottage Grove Oregon. More recently they began reclaiming older, favorite vegetable varieties sometimes shelved by their seed suppliers. Harvesting their very tiny product has sometimes been challenging. Territorial’s Seed saving techniques range from natural fermentation to the newest processors. Today, they grow almost 20% of the seed they offer, especially lettuces, tomatoes, cucumbers, and squash. Territorial pledges to not knowingly sell genetically engineered seeds or plants.
Johnny's Selected Seeds - Johnny's Selected Seeds is proud to be a member of the Safe Seed Initiative, and to present our Safe Seed Pledge, following. Our research department manages several breeding programs and performs acres of variety trials at Johnny's certified organic farm. Johnny's research program focuses on development of new seed varieties and research plays a key role in quality control efforts.
Stokes Seeds - Stokes Seeds maintains a 34 acre research farm in St. Catharines, Ontario. Decisions on what varieties Stokes carries in the catalog is made from the evaluations done at these trial grounds. Beyond the 10 acre trial area at the Stokes farm is 24 acres devoted to research and development. This particular area is not open to the public because of sensitive conditions needed to breed new varieties. Stokes have been pioneers in developing early, great tasting corn, tomatoes and peppers through he efforts of the recently retired Dr. Ernie Kerr. The varieties are bred for earliness, exceptional taste, improved yields and disease resistance. Stokes has developed partnerships with a number of renowned breeders to continue the development of excellent exclusive varieties.
Seeds of Change - Each year at the Seeds of Change Research Farm and Gardens we grow over a thousand varieties of plants. In close collaboration with our extensive network of certified organic seed growers and plant breeders, we cultivate, study, refine, and expand the broad genetic diversity that we offer. This work furthers our goal of supplying gardeners and market growers with a diverse and fascinating selection of the truest, most vigorous lines of 100% organic seeds. We also test the tools and other gardening products we offer. Furthermore, we experiment with various organic methods like different ways to compost, water, and cover crop. If you'd like to visit our research farm, click here for details on our yearly farm tours.
